Your Pub Seating Is Falling Apart — But You Don't Have to Shut Down to Fix It
Your pub's booth seating is looking shabby. The fabric's torn in three places. The bar stools are stained and sagging. Your restaurant's armchairs don't look like you anymore. And your first thought is: "I'll have to close for a week and get everything done at once."
You don't. And I can prove there's a better way.
Why Your Pub's Seating Is Dying Faster Than It Should (And What's Really Happening)
Commercial furniture lives a much harder life. A restaurant booth might see 50+ people sitting in it per day. A pub barstool gets constant use. Hotel seating needs to feel upscale while withstanding abuse.
This means:
- Fabric must be heavy-duty: Lighter residential fabrics won't last more than 12 months. Commercial-grade fabrics (40,000+ rub count) are essential
- Seams need to be reinforced: Double-stitching and industrial techniques prevent seams splitting under heavy use
- Frames take a battering: Commercial pieces often need structural repairs that residential furniture wouldn't need
- Stain resistance is crucial: Performance fabrics or leather are almost always the right choice for food and beverage venues
"Choose a cheap fabric for a commercial space and you'll be reupholstering again in 18 months. The best fabric is the one that lasts longest and looks good the whole time."
Fire Safety Compliance (Non-Negotiable — And We Handle All the Paperwork)
This is non-negotiable. All commercial upholstered furniture must meet strict UK fire safety standards:
- BS 5852 Schedule 4 — cigarette ignition test. The fabric and filling must not ignite from contact with a smouldering cigarette. This is essential for pubs where smoking may happen outside and then people come back in
- BS 7176 — flame-source test. The furniture must resist ignition from a match or lighter flame and not contribute to fire spread
Both standards apply to hospitality venues. This means every fabric, every foam, every component must be compliant. I keep detailed certification for every project — your venue could be audited by local authority enforcement, and they'll want proof that all upholstery is compliant.
If you use an upholsterer, always ask for fire test certificates. If they can't provide them, don't proceed. It's a legal liability.
Choosing the Right Fabric for High-Traffic Venues
Leather (real or high-quality faux) is the gold standard. It's wipeable, stain-resistant, ages beautifully, and lasts for years. Commercial faux leather is surprisingly durable now. Cost: £20–45 per metre.
Performance fabrics (Crypton-treated, solution-dyed) are specifically engineered for hospitality use. They resist stains, clean easily, and are durable. They won't feel quite as luxe as leather but are excellent value. Cost: £18–35 per metre.
Heavy wool blends are durable and professional-looking but need professional dry cleaning if heavily soiled. Better for upscale spaces where spills are less common. Cost: £25–40 per metre.
Budget option: Heavy polyester blends meet fire standards and clean well, though they won't age as gracefully. Cost: £12–18 per metre.
For most pubs and casual restaurants, I'd recommend leather or performance fabrics. For hotels with lower-traffic areas, you can be a bit more creative.
The Smart Way to Refresh Your Seating (Without Losing Revenue for a Week)
When you're reupholstering a busy venue, downtime is money lost. Here are strategies to minimise disruption:
Phase the work: Instead of doing all seating at once, we can work on sections — booths Week 1, bar stools Week 2, accent chairs Week 3. Your venue stays operational the whole time.
Off-peak scheduling: I can work mornings before service, or Mondays when many hospitality venues are closed or quieter. We discuss the best timing during consultation.
Rapid turnaround options: A set of 4 bar stools can be done in 5–7 working days if you prioritise it. Booth seating (10–15 sections) takes 2–3 weeks working steadily.
Mobile service: For smaller work like recovering high-backed booth seats, I can sometimes do partial work on-site if space permits.
What Commercial Reupholstery Actually Costs (And Yes, Bulk Gets You a Better Deal)
Commercial projects are usually quoted by the piece, not the metre:
- Bar stool reupholstery: £120–200 each (depending on size and complexity)
- Single dining chair: £100–180 each
- Booth seating section: £250–500 per section (usually 1–2 metre wide sections)
- Hotel armchair: £200–400 each
Bulk orders get a discount. If you're doing 20+ bar stools or 30+ dining chairs, expect a 10–15% reduction per item.
Factor in delivery and collection costs for large orders. I offer both direct collection and delivery services across Essex.
Built-In Booth Seating (The Trickier Job — But Still Doable Without Closing)
Many pubs and restaurants have built-in booth seating. This can't be moved to the workshop, so it must be reupholstered on-site. This adds time and cost because:
- I need to work around customer seating areas
- We can't strip and rebuild as thoroughly as in the workshop
- Drying time for adhesives is different in a busy, warm space
Built-in work typically costs 20–30% more than equivalent workshop pieces. For built-in seating, I'd quote separately after a site visit.
Keeping It Looking Good (Because New Upholstery Deserves Respect)
Even quality commercial upholstery needs care:
- Daily: Vacuum/brush down fabric to remove crumbs and dust before they settle in
- Weekly: Spot-clean spills promptly with appropriate cleaner for your fabric
- Monthly: Deep clean high-touch areas (armrests, seat edges)
- Annually: Professional clean if heavy use
Leather needs conditioning every 12–18 months to prevent drying out and cracking.
