Your Caravan Interior Is Falling Apart – Here's Why Standard Upholstery Fails (and What Works)
Caravan and boat interiors take a hammering. Salt spray, UV exposure, moisture, temperature swings, and constant movement all conspire to age upholstery faster than in a static home.
I've done extensive work refreshing caravans and boats across Essex and the southeast. Whether you're reviving an older motorhome or sprucing up a day boat, here's what you need to know about marine and caravan upholstery.
Why Your Caravan Cushions Smell Like Mould (And How to Fix It)
Standard furniture fabrics won't survive in a caravan or boat. The combination of moisture, salt, UV exposure, and vibration from travel means you need specialist materials:
- Salt spray damage: Salt air corrodes standard fabrics and padding. Marine-grade materials have protective treatments
- Moisture & mildew: Caravans and boats trap moisture. Fabric and foam must resist mould and mildew growth
- UV fading: Sunlight bleaches and degrades standard fabrics. Marine fabrics have UV stabilisers
- Vibration wear: Constant movement from travel accelerates normal wear. Seams need extra strength
- Space constraints: Caravans and boats have awkward shapes and tight spaces. Custom fitting is essential
"Put standard upholstery in a boat and it'll last 2–3 years before mould and salt damage make it look terrible. Marine fabric will easily last 10+ years with normal care."
The Fabrics That Actually Last (Not the Ones That Fall Apart in 2 Years)
Sunbrella & equivalent marine-grade acrylics are the gold standard. These outdoor fabrics are solution-dyed (colour goes all the way through the fibre), UV-stabilised, and treated to resist moisture. They're pricey (£25–40 per metre) but outlast everything else. Available in many colours and patterns.
Outdura and similar performance fabrics are similar to Sunbrella but slightly more affordable (£18–30 per metre). Excellent durability and stain resistance. These are my go-to for most caravan and boat work.
Vinyl and faux leather are waterproof and easy to clean, making them popular for boat galleys and areas prone to splashing. They can feel hot to sit on in summer and don't age as gracefully as fabric, but they're practical and durable. Cost: £15–35 per metre.
Wool blends with water treatment can work if you're prepared to maintain them. They look more traditional and feel warmer than synthetic outdoor fabrics. They need regular dry cleaning and won't tolerate salt spray as well as marine acrylics.
UV Resistance & Colour Fading
All marine fabrics have UV protection, but some colours fade more visibly than others. If you're choosing fabric for a boat that sits in strong sunlight:
- Lighter colours: Show fading more obviously but stay cooler
- Darker colours: Hide fading better but absorb more heat (uncomfortable in summer)
- Patterned fabrics: Fading is less noticeable in busy patterns than solids
I usually recommend mid-tone patterned marine fabrics for caravans and boats. They hide wear, don't show every speck of dirt, and age more gracefully than light solids.
Mould & Moisture Resistance
Caravans and boats are prone to condensation and moisture buildup, especially in winter or when closed up. Your fabric choice matters:
- Marine fabrics have treatments to repel moisture and resist mould growth
- Foam padding must be quick-drying or closed-cell (doesn't absorb moisture)
- Avoid natural jute backing — use synthetic or vinyl backing instead
- Underside ventilation is important — we ensure adequate airflow under cushions
Proper ventilation in your caravan or boat is just as important as fabric choice. Air circulation prevents moisture buildup that would damage even the best upholstery.
Custom Fitting for Unusual Shapes
Caravans and boats have curved bunks, awkward corners, and odd shapes that don't exist in regular furniture. This is where specialist upholstery work really matters:
- Custom foam cutting: We cut foam to exact specifications for curved surfaces and tight spaces
- Fitted seating: Instead of separate cushions, we create custom-fitted upholstery that stays in place even when the vehicle is moving
- Curved piping & trim: We can shape trim and piping to follow curves smoothly
- Fixed installation: Upholstery is securely attached so it doesn't shift during travel
This specialist work costs more than standard upholstery, but the results are purpose-built for your specific caravan or boat interior.
Common Caravan & Boat Projects
Reupholster a caravan sofa/bed: £400–700. Usually involves removing old upholstery, rebuilding padding, and fitting new marine fabric. Turnaround: 2–3 weeks.
New cushions for boat seating: £150–300 per cushion depending on size. Custom shapes add to the cost. Quick turnaround possible (1 week).
Full caravan interior refresh: Sofa, beds, dinette seating, headboard. £1,500–3,500 depending on size and condition. This typically takes 4–6 weeks as we do phased work on each section.
Motorhome cab seating: Can be tricky due to complex shapes and the vibration from driving. £300–600 per seat. Reinforced seaming and specialist fitting essential.
Watch Your Shabby Caravan Transform (The Difference Is Shocking)
A tired, faded caravan interior can genuinely be transformed. Old upholstery that looks shabby and smells of mildew becomes fresh, bright, and modern-looking with new marine-grade fabric.
Here's what transforms a caravan:
- New colour scheme (lighter colours and fresh patterns make spaces feel bigger)
- Bright, clean marine fabric instead of faded, worn material
- Firm, supportive new cushioning instead of sagging old foam
- Proper mould and moisture treatment
The difference is dramatic, and it makes your caravan actually enjoyable to spend time in.
Tips for Maintaining Caravan & Boat Upholstery
- Clean regularly: Dust and salt accumulate quickly. Vacuum or brush monthly
- Dry properly: Open windows regularly to prevent moisture buildup
- Protect from sun: Use blinds or covers when parked for extended periods
- Spot clean spills: Use appropriate marine fabric cleaner (mild soap and water for most fabrics)
- Treat stains quickly: The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove
